    Theory and the everyday.Monica B. Pearl - 2018 - Angelaki 23 (1):199-203.
The Argonauts combines high theory and the everyday. It does this by combining lofty thought, the quotidian, close attention to words and ideas and stray thoughts, and desire. It does this through form, the way it blends and refuses genre, the way it skips from one thought or story to another, and making them connect by virtue of contiguity. The Argonauts refuses form in a way that parallels how Maggie's and Harry's bodies and identities refuse gender taxonomy. It also refuses (...)

    Máscaras sem rosto: Zaratustra como um mestre “pós-nietzschiano”.Mónica B. Cragnolini - 2020 - Cadernos Nietzsche 41 (2):9-26.
After briefly introducing the notion of mask within Nietzsche’s philosophy, as well as its connection with the idea of every possible ‘identity’, we aim at analyzing the position held by Zarathustra’s mask as a teacher, in line with the meanings of his ‘teachings’. We’ll show how Zarathustra’s teaching presents as a sort of nonteaching, thereby indicating how it becomes itself visible amongst some problems in contemporary thought.

    Nietzsche nos estudos críticos da animalidade.Mónica B. Cragnolini - 2024 - Cadernos Nietzsche 45 (2).
Starting from a brief history of how Nietzsche was considered and used as an argumentative piece in animalistic literature, this study focuses on seeking an understanding of the contributions that Nietzsche's philosophy can make to the field of critical studies of animality, an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the study of animals, their ways of being and living on the planet, their links with the rest of reality, and their rights.

    Proposições nietzschianas para pensar a questão animal.Mónica B. Cragnolini - 2018 - Cadernos Nietzsche 39 (1):120-131.
In The Gay Science, Book I, Aphorism 7, which is entitled “Something for the industrious”, Nietzsche points to a “work program” to the new gay science, programm that move away philosophy from usual places with which it is familiar. Likewise, in The Gay Science there are mentions about a “natural history of the animal” and, given the link between the birth of moral and our relation with animals (as observed in Human, all too Human II, 57), I consider that part (...)

    Anillin: The First Proofreading‐like Scaffold?Richard G. Morris, Kabir B. Husain, Srikanth Budnar & Alpha S. Yap - 2020 - Bioessays 42 (10):2000055.
Scaffolds are fundamental to many cellular signaling pathways. In this essay, a novel class of scaffolds are proposed, whose action bears striking resemblance to kinetic proofreading. Commonly, scaffold proteins are thought to work as tethers, bringing different components of a pathway together to improve the likelihood of their interaction. However, recent studies show that the cytoskeletal scaffold, anillin, supports contractile signaling by a novel, non‐tethering mechanism that controls the membrane dissociation kinetics of RhoA. More generally, such proof‐reading‐like scaffolds are distinguished (...)

The genetic analysis of mitosis in Aspergillus nidulans.N. Ronald Morris, John H. Doonan, Stephen A. Osmani & Dorothy B. Engle - 1989 - Bioessays 10 (6):196-201.
We describe here recent work on the molecular genetics of mitosis in the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans. Aspergillus is one of three simple eukaryotes with powerful genetic systems that have been used to analyze mitosis. The modern molecular biological techniques available with this organism have made it possible to use mutations to identify genes and proteins that play an important role in mitosis. Three Aspergillus genes that affect mitosis are described. One gene, nimA, is specifically expressed late in the cell (...)

Illness and Culture in the Postmodern Age.David B. Morris - 1998 - Univ of California Press.
We become ill in ways our parents and grandparents did not, with diseases unheard of and treatments undreamed of generations ago. This text tells the story of the modern experience of illness, linking ideas of illness, health, and postmodernism.

How to Speak Postmodern: Medicine, Illness, and Cultural Change.David B. Morris - 2000 - Hastings Center Report 30 (6):7-16.
The modernist “biomedical model” offers an inadequate understanding of illness. At the same time, some of the conceptual constructs that are offered to supplement the biomedical model are carelessly employed. Much that is said and written about empathy and healing, in particular, fails to reflect the historical and critical self‐awareness of postmodern thinking at its best.

Toward a theory of moral debt:(I)The idea of moral debt in the common understanding.Morris B. Storer - 1971 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 14 (1-4):355-385.
Part One. In our strife to express the meanings of moral terms, we have neglected the one transparently built?in meaning: ?A man ought to keep his promises? could mean ?A man owes it to other men to keep his promises. Such is his debt and duty ? just what is due or owed?. This proposal is supported by the evidence of major languages of the world, ancient and modern, in all of which identical or closely related words serve to express (...)

The Catholic School Ethos: its effect on post‐16 student academic achievement.Andrew B. Morris - 1995 - Educational Studies 21 (1):67-83.
Summary Recent concern with the academic performance of schools has led a number of local education authorities to develop systems for measuring the ?added value? that can be attributed to particular institutions in their control. An analysis of data published by one Midlands shire county on the performance of A level candidates in 1992 raised questions about the relative levels of academic achievement of pupils who remained within the Catholic school system compared to those who transferred to local authority institutions (...)

Eros and illness.David B. Morris - 2017 - Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press.
Eros and Illness explores the place of desire in illness. We urgently need such an exploration because illness is no longer simply a natural feature of the human condition. Most people fall ill, but illness now falls under the supervision of biomedicine, a science-based, state-regulated system dominated by the new molecular gaze. The use of a person's distinctive genetic data to guide treatment and to forestall disease--called "personalized medicine"-- reflects how the molecular gaze can produce valuable advances in biomedical healthcare. (...)

    Philosophy, sexuality and gender: Mutual interrogations.Morris B. Kaplan - 1994 - Metaphilosophy 25 (4):293-303.
These three papers present a quite diverse and complementary set of answers to the question, “Why Sexuality Matters to Philosophy.” They show the ways in which sexuality as an issue may be of interest to philosophers working on a wide range of questions. The theme of sexuality appears as both subject matter and context for the development of scientific theories of human behavior, as a pervasive dimension of the representation of everyday life, and as a social phenomenon raising important questions (...)

    Ebola Needs One Bioethics.Paul B. Thompson & Monica List - 2015 - Ethics, Policy and Environment 18 (1):96-102.
Bioethics coverage of the recent Ebola outbreak neglected the ethical issues associated with aspects of the outbreak having environmental significance. The neglect of environmental dimensions is symptomatic of the way that the current institutionalization of bioethics as a field of inquiry separates medical and environmental expertise. As visionaries who are recognizing the need for better integration of human and veterinary medicine with environmental health are starting to call for “One Health”, it is now time to recognize the need for “One (...)

Synthesizing materials from law, philosophy, psychoanalysis and literature, Kaplan argues that sexual desire is central to the pursuit of happiness: equal citizenship requires individual freedom to shape oneself through a variety of intimate associations.

So Far, So Good: levels of academic achievement in Catholic schools.Andrew B. Morris[1] - 1998 - Educational Studies 24 (1):83-94.
Summary Recent evidence from Diocesan and Office for Standards in Education inspections under the Education Act 1992 seems to suggest that while pupils in Catholic schools in England and Wales obtain high levels of academic success at Key Stage Two and Key Stage Four compared with those attending other schools in the maintained sector, their achievements in Advanced level examinations are lower than one would expect. The article points to evidence of a similar long?standing pattern of performance of pupils in (...)

Part Two, Area A. Resuming the investigation set afoot in Part 1,1 we there proposed that subliminally people do commonly sense moral obligation as a kind of debt (chreos) of shared responsibility ? every person's share in the cost of a good community which is the common cause of all. Testing this ?common understanding? by the facts of human nature and community, this article examines the substratum of my good, good of others, idea of good community, of common cause in (...)

Light is strangely absent from most accounts of the environment. From photosynthesis to vitamin D, however, light is central to human well-being. Human circadian rhythms are keyed the alternation of dark and light. Erosion of the ozone layer makes skin cancer a growing threat from excess ultraviolet radiation. Light plays a significant role in health and illness. In changing historical circumstances, light continues to evoke and to express significant issues of value.

In his presidential address (American Philosophical Association, Western Division), William Frankena sets himself against the relativist and irrationalist drift of our time in asserting that ?It is of the essence of a normative judgment to claim that it is justified, rational or valid?, and that fully informed men of reason will ultimately agree about value questions. Applauding the return to reason, this note finds a need for further clarification on the definition of normative terms, the justification of normative judgments, the (...)
